Search location, experience and comfort: set your priorities before choosing.
Read the guide
Start with the ground you plan to search. Dry fields, salty sand and mineralised soil have different requirements.
Next, consider the detector's weight, shaft adjustment and menu layout. Choose a model you can use comfortably rather than simply the one with the most features.
Before buying, confirm the model's specifications and what is included in the box.
Listen to the signal.
Know the ground.
Learn how sweep speed, coil height and ground conditions affect your search.
Read the guide
Keep the coil close and parallel to the ground. Make steady, overlapping sweeps and avoid sudden or fast swings.
When you receive a signal, approach the target from different directions. A repeatable response helps you assess it.
Practise with familiar metal objects first and follow your detector's user manual.

What to know before you choose.
How should I choose my first detector?
First, decide where you will search. A clear menu, comfortable handling and suitable search modes are important when starting out. Use the model finder above as a starting point.
Can every detector be used on the beach?
Dry sand and salty, wet sand present different conditions. Check the model's saltwater ground compatibility and water resistance limits before beach use. A water-resistant coil does not mean the control unit can also be submerged.
How deep can a detector detect?
There is no single depth figure that applies in every situation. Target size, shape and position, soil, coil and settings all affect the result. Refer to the model's verified technical information.
Which accessories should I start with?
Suitable headphones, a carry bag and maintenance equipment can support your use. A pinpointer helps locate a target more precisely. Check that accessories are compatible with your chosen model.
